One of the brilliant aspects of this board is its practicality. The key to serving warm, delightful nachos is strategic timing. While your delicious nachos are baking to golden perfection, you can arrange all the fresh green toppings on your serving board. Then, with a simple slide, your perfectly baked, football-shaped nachos land right in the center, hot and ready to enjoy. This method ensures your main attraction remains warm and gooey, while the cool, crisp garnishes are perfectly presented for optimal freshness and crunch.

Your Game Day Playbook: What You’ll Need

Creating this show-stopping Football Nacho Board requires a stellar lineup of ingredients and a few key supplies. We’ve handpicked each component to ensure maximum flavor and visual impact. Here’s what you’ll need to assemble your winning spread:

Essential Ingredients:

  • Boneless, skinless chicken tenders: The star protein, tender and ready to soak up that BBQ flavor.
  • Barbecue sauce: Choose your favorite smoky or sweet variety to coat the chicken.
  • Round tortilla chips: Sturdy and perfectly shaped for layering, forming the base of your nacho football.
  • Refried beans: Adds a creamy, savory layer that helps hold the chips together and boosts flavor.
  • Shredded cheese: A blend like cheddar and Monterey Jack melts beautifully for that irresistible gooey texture.
  • Guacamole: Creamy, rich, and a staple for any nacho board. (Don’t miss my homemade version for extra freshness!)
  • Salsa verde: A tangy, vibrant green salsa that adds a refreshing kick.
  • Cilantro: Freshly chopped for a burst of herbaceous flavor.
  • Pickled jalapeños: For those who love a bit of tangy heat, a fantastic addition.
  • Fresh jalapeños: Sliced thin for a crisp texture and a bolder spicy note.
  • Limes: Cut into wedges for a bright, citrusy squeeze over the finished nachos.
  • Shredded lettuce: Provides a cool, crisp contrast to the warm nachos.
  • Sliced green olives: A briny, savory garnish that adds depth.
  • Sliced green onions: Mildly pungent, offering a fresh oniony bite.
  • Avocados: Diced into chunks for extra creaminess and healthy fats.
  • Sour cream: Essential for cooling spice and creating those iconic football laces.

Recommended Supplies:

  • Parchment paper: Crucial for shaping your nachos and easy transfer.
  • Cookie Sheet: A sturdy baking sheet to cook your football-shaped nachos.
  • 8 small dip bowls: Perfect for holding your various green garnishes and dips.

Mastering the Play: How to Make Football Nachos

Creating these football-shaped nachos is easier than you think. Follow these simple steps for a perfectly cooked and beautifully presented dish:

  1. **Prepare Your Football Shape:** Begin by cutting out two identical football shapes from parchment paper. One will line your baking sheet, and the other will mark the spot on your serving board. You can use a dedicated football-shaped serving platter or a large oval plate as a template to ensure a perfectly authentic football outline.

  1. **Cook the BBQ Chicken:** In a large nonstick skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Add 1 lb. of boneless, skinless chicken tenders and cook for 2 minutes on each side until lightly browned. Reduce the heat to a simmer, pour in 1/2 cup barbecue sauce, and toss to thoroughly coat the chicken. Cover the pan and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the chicken is tender enough to shred easily with a fork. Once cooked, shred the chicken and set aside.
  2. **Build the Nacho Base:** Lay one of your football-shaped parchment paper cutouts onto a large cookie sheet. Take each round tortilla chip, spread a small amount of refried beans on it, and carefully place it on the parchment paper, overlapping slightly, to completely cover the football shape. This creates a sturdy and flavorful base.
  3. **Layer Up the Flavor:** Generously sprinkle the bean-covered chips with a layer of shredded cheese. For a truly hearty board, repeat this process with another layer of chips, beans, and cheese. If you’re serving a smaller crowd, a single robust layer might be sufficient.
  4. **First Bake:** Once you have your desired layers of chips, beans, and cheese arranged in the football shape on the baking sheet, place it in a preheated oven at 400°F. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted and starts to turn golden brown in spots. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.

  1. **Add the BBQ Chicken & Final Bake:** Carefully remove the nachos from the oven. Evenly distribute the shredded BBQ chicken over the melted cheese and chips. Return the baking sheet to the oven for an additional 5 minutes to heat the chicken through and allow the flavors to meld beautifully.

Building Your “Football Field” Nacho Board: Presentation Pointers

While your mouth-watering nachos are finishing their bake, it’s time to set the stage for your impressive Football Nacho Board. The goal is to create a vibrant “football field” surrounding the central nacho football, making it as visually appealing as it is delicious.

  1. **Prepare Your Board:** Place your second piece of football-shaped parchment paper precisely in the middle of a large 18” x 12” wood board (or a similar large serving board). This parchment acts as a barrier for your nachos and helps define the “field.”
  2. **Arrange the Green Garnishes:** Now for the fun part! Artfully arrange all your green garnishes around the outside perimeter of the football-shaped parchment paper. Think of it as decorating a miniature football field! Place small dip bowls with guacamole and salsa verde in two corners of the board for easy access. Fill the remaining space with neatly arranged piles of cilantro, pickled jalapeños, fresh jalapeño slices, lime wedges, shredded lettuce, sliced green olives, sliced green onions, and avocado chunks.

**Pro Tip for Garnishes:** Some excellent green garnish options include: cilantro, pickled jalapeños, fresh jalapeños, creamy guacamole, bright lime wedges, crisp shredded lettuce, savory sliced green olives, pungent sliced green onions, diced avocado chunks, and zesty salsa verde. Feel free to use any combination of these that your guests will enjoy most. You don’t need to use every single option – focus on freshness and variety!

  1. **The Grand Transfer:** Once all your green garnishes are beautifully arrayed on the board, and your nachos are hot out of the oven, it’s time for the seamless transfer. Very carefully slide the football-shaped nachos, still on their parchment paper, from the baking sheet directly onto the open space on your serving board. The parchment paper will ensure a clean and easy transition.

Alternatively, if you’re hosting a more laid-back gathering, you can simply leave the nachos on the sheet pan and serve them directly from there, garnishing around the edges of the pan.

  1. **The Finishing Touch: Football Laces:** To complete the illusion, use sour cream to create the distinctive laces on your nacho football. You can either use a store-bought squirt container of sour cream for convenience or spoon sour cream into a sealed plastic baggie, snip off a small corner, and pipe the laces with precision. This final detail truly brings the “football” to life!

Description

Wow the crowd with this ultimate Football Nacho Board! Delicious BBQ chicken nachos surrounded by an amazing selection of green garnishes to top them with. It will have everyone digging in for the win on game day!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken tenders
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 (32 ounce) bag round tortilla chips
  • 1 (15 ounce) can refried beans
  • 1 (12 ounce) bag shredded cheese
  • 1 cup guacamole
  • 1 cup salsa verde
  • 1 – 1/2 cups cilantro
  • 1/2 cup drained pickled jalapeños
  • 3 medium fresh jalapenos, sliced thin
  • 4 limes, sliced into sixths
  • 1 – 1/2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup sliced green olives
  • 1 – 1/2 cups sliced green onions
  • 2 avocados, diced into chunks
  • 1/4 cup sour cream

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat then add 1 lb. of boneless, skinless chicken tenders and cook for 2 minutes on each side. Reduce the heat to a simmer and add 1/2 cup barbecue sauce, toss to coat the chicken completely then cover the pan and cook 5-7 minutes or until chicken is tender and shreds easily with a fork.
  2. Next cut out two football shapes from parchment paper. Place one on the board and one on a baking sheet.
  3. Spread each round chip with some refried beans and place them on the football-shaped parchment paper on the baking sheet so that the chips cover it and create the football shape.
  4. Sprinkle the bean-covered chips with a layer of shredded cheese. Repeat this process with another layer of chips, beans and cheese.
  5. Once you have two layers of chips on the baking sheet in a football shape, bake at 400°F for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese starts to turn golden brown in spots, then cover with the shredded BBQ chicken and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
  6. While the nachos are baking, start building the board so that when the nachos are ready you can just place them on the board and dig in. Do this by placing the second piece of football-shaped parchment paper in the middle of a 20”x14” wood board.
  7. Place the guacamole and salsa verde in small serving bowls in two corners of the board. Surround the outside of the football-shaped parchment sheet with all the green garnishes so it looks like a football field. See images for suggested placement and feel free to use whichever green garnishes your crowd would enjoy most. You don’t have to use all of them.
  8. Once you have all of the green garnishes placed on the board, it’s time to add the baked football-shaped nachos. Carefully slide the nachos from the baking sheet onto the open space you have lined with parchment paper on the board.
  9. Use the sour cream to create football laces on the nachos. Either use the sour cream that comes in a squirt container from the store or put the sour cream in a sealed baggie and cut the corner off so you can easily squeeze it to draw the laces.
  10. Serve and enjoy!
