Embrace the Joy of Healthier Homemade Donuts
The universal love for donuts is undeniable. Whether it’s a nostalgic trip to the local donut shop, the fun of frying up a batch at home, or the sheer delight of baking a quick creation, these sweet, round treats with their iconic hole and delectable glaze bring a smile to everyone’s face. But what if you could enjoy that same joy, guilt-free? That’s exactly what our Whole Wheat Baked Banana Donuts with Peanut Butter Glaze offer – a healthier twist on a classic comfort food that doesn’t compromise on flavor or satisfaction.
These aren’t just any donuts; they are a mindful indulgence crafted with your well-being in mind. We’ve swapped out traditional all-purpose flour for nutrient-rich whole wheat flour, incorporated the natural sweetness of ripe mashed bananas, and significantly reduced the added sugar. Plus, by baking instead of frying, we eliminate the need for butter or oil in the donut batter, resulting in a lighter, less greasy treat. The crowning glory is a simple yet decadent peanut butter glaze, which adds a perfect balance of salty and sweet. And for those who love a pop of color and extra fun, sprinkles are always an optional, yet highly recommended, addition!

The Healthier Choice: Why Baked Donuts Reign Supreme
Opting for baked donuts over fried ones is a game-changer when it comes to healthy eating. Traditional fried donuts absorb a significant amount of oil, contributing to higher calorie and fat content. Baking, on the other hand, uses hot air to cook the donuts, yielding a beautifully moist interior and a slightly crispy exterior without the added grease. This method not only makes cleanup a breeze but also results in a lighter texture that truly lets the natural flavors shine through.
Beyond the baking method, the ingredients make all the difference. Whole wheat flour provides essential fiber, vitamins, and minerals that regular all-purpose flour lacks. This means a more sustained energy release and better digestive health. The ripe bananas not only lend incredible moisture and natural sweetness, reducing the need for excessive added sugars, but also contribute potassium and other beneficial nutrients. These baked banana donuts are a testament that healthier choices can be incredibly delicious and deeply satisfying, allowing you to enjoy a beloved treat without any pangs of guilt.
The Irresistible Flavor Profile: Banana & Peanut Butter Perfection
These donuts emerge from the oven wonderfully moist and perfectly sweet, thanks to a touch of brown sugar and the inherent sweetness of the mashed bananas. The earthiness and creaminess of the peanut butter glaze provide a delightful counterpoint, introducing a subtle saltiness that perfectly complements the sweetness of the donut. It’s a flavor combination that’s both comforting and exciting, appealing to both kids and adults alike. This harmonious blend creates a truly memorable donut experience that you’ll want to revisit again and again.
Baking these donuts is also a fantastic family activity. My boys absolutely love getting involved, from mixing the batter to the exciting final step of dipping each donut into the warm, gooey glaze. The entire process is incredibly quick, taking just about 20 minutes from start to finish, meaning warm, fresh donuts can be on your table in under half an hour. They are absolutely heavenly when served warm, but remain just as enjoyable at room temperature, making them versatile for any occasion. We frequently enjoy them for a special breakfast, a wholesome afternoon snack, or even a light dessert after dinner. They’ve truly become a beloved staple in our home!

Mastering the Art of Whole Wheat Baked Banana Donuts with a Peanut Butter Glaze
Creating these delightful treats is simpler than you might imagine. The key to successful baked donuts lies in a few straightforward steps and, of course, the right equipment. If you don’t already own a donut pan, consider this your friendly nudge to invest in one! It’s a kitchen tool you’ll find yourself reaching for repeatedly, especially after experiencing the sheer joy and ease of making these banana donuts. For those who are already proud owners of a donut pan, you’re perfectly set to begin your baking adventure.
Step-by-Step Baking Guide:
- Preparation is Key: Begin by preheating your oven to 425°F (220°C). Prepare a regular-sized donut pan (typically yielding 6 donuts) by spraying it generously with a non-stick cooking spray. Set it aside, ready for the batter.
- Mixing the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, light brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly, ensuring they are well-incorporated and free of lumps. This creates the foundational structure for your light and fluffy donuts.
- Combining the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the large egg, fat-free milk, and vanilla extract until they are fully blended. The vanilla adds a wonderful aromatic depth that complements the banana flavor beautifully.
- Bringing it All Together: Gently pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir them together until they are just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter; a few small lumps are perfectly fine and will help ensure a tender donut. Overmixing can lead to a tough texture.
- Adding the Star Ingredient: Carefully fold in the mashed ripe bananas. Their natural sweetness and moisture are what make these donuts so incredibly delicious and tender.

- Piping for Perfection: For easy and mess-free distribution, transfer the donut batter into a large resealable plastic bag. Snip off one of the corners to create a makeshift piping bag. Carefully pipe the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each ring approximately two-thirds full. If you’re lucky enough to have two donut pans, you can bake the entire batch at once. Otherwise, you’ll need to bake the donuts in two separate batches to yield a total of 12.
- Baking Time: Bake the donuts for 7-8 minutes, or until they are set and spring back lightly when gently touched. The exact time may vary slightly depending on your oven. Once baked, let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat the process with any remaining batter.
Crafting the Luscious Peanut Butter Glaze
While your freshly baked donuts are cooling, it’s time to prepare the incredibly simple yet utterly delicious peanut butter glaze. This glaze is a key element that elevates these banana donuts to a truly extraordinary level.
- Melting the Peanut Butter: In a shallow, microwave-safe bowl, place the creamy peanut butter. Microwave it for approximately 45-60 seconds, or until it becomes beautifully melted and smooth. Stir well to ensure an even consistency. The goal is a pourable, dip-friendly glaze.
- Glazing Technique: Take each cooled donut and dip the top surface into the melted peanut butter glaze, then lift it out. For a more generous coating, repeat this dipping process a second time. Immediately after dipping, turn the donut upside down and place it on a wire rack. Position the wire rack over a baking sheet to catch any excess peanut butter that drips down the sides. This ensures a clean workspace and allows the glaze to set beautifully.
- Optional Sprinkles: If you’re using sprinkles, now is the time to add them! Sprinkle them over the glazed donuts while the peanut butter is still wet, ensuring they adhere nicely.

- Setting and Serving: Serve your glazed donuts right away for a warm, melty experience. Alternatively, allow them to rest for about 30 minutes until the peanut butter glaze has fully set. Once set, store any leftover donuts in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain their freshness. They make a fantastic grab-and-go snack or breakfast for days to come!

Tips for Donut Perfection & Creative Variations
Making delicious baked donuts is incredibly rewarding, and a few simple tips can elevate your baking experience:
- Banana Ripeness is Key: Always use very ripe bananas for this recipe. The browner the spots on the peel, the sweeter and more flavorful the banana will be, which directly translates to a more moist and naturally sweet donut. Overripe bananas are also easier to mash smoothly.
- Donut Pan Alternatives: If you don’t have a donut pan yet, you can use a muffin tin. Simply fill each muffin cup about two-thirds full. The baking time might be slightly longer (around 12-15 minutes), and you’ll end up with delicious “donut muffins” instead of traditional donut shapes, but they’ll taste just as good!
- Customize Your Glaze: While peanut butter is a star, feel free to experiment. A simple vanilla glaze (powdered sugar, milk, vanilla) or a cream cheese glaze would also be delightful. You can also mix in a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg into the donut batter for an extra layer of warmth.
- Add-ins for Extra Flavor: Consider folding in a handful of mini chocolate chips, chopped walnuts, or pecans into the batter for added texture and flavor. Just be careful not to overload the batter.
- Storage: These donuts are best enjoyed fresh, but they keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. You can also freeze the unglazed donuts for up to 3 months; simply thaw and glaze when ready to serve.
This recipe for Whole Wheat Baked Banana Donuts with Peanut Butter Glaze is more than just a recipe; it’s an invitation to create joy in your kitchen. It’s about enjoying wholesome ingredients, savoring delicious flavors, and making memories with those you love. Description
Whole wheat banana donuts that are baked not fried and dipped in a pure peanut butter glaze for a easy and healthier breakfast treat that’s oh so yummy to eat!
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup fat free milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large ripe bananas, mashed
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter
- sprinkles, if desired
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Spray a regular size donut pan (that makes 6 donuts) with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just combined. Fold in the mashed bananas.
- Place batter in a large resealable plastic bag and snip off one of the corners. Pipe batter into prepared donut pan, filling each ring about 2/3 full. If you have two pans, you could go ahead and use all of the batter at once. If not, you will need to bake the donuts in two batches.
- Bake for 7-8 minutes or until donuts are set and spring back up when touched. Let cool in pan 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack. Repeat process with remaining batter until you have 12 donuts.
- While donuts are cooling, microwave the peanut butter in a shallow bowl for about 45-60 seconds or until melted and smooth. Dip the top of each donut into and out of the melted peanut butter twice and then turn upside down on a wire rack that’s set over a baking sheet so the peanut butter can drip down the sides of the donut and the excess onto the baking sheet. Sprinkle with sprinkles, if desired.
- Serve right away or let rest until the peanut butter sets, about 30 minutes. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
