Gathering your ingredients is the first step to creating these amazing pizzas. Most of what you need are pantry staples and fresh items easily found at any grocery store. Here’s a detailed list to ensure you have everything on hand:

  • Hamburger Buns: The foundation of our pizzas. Choose fresh, soft buns that will toast up nicely.
  • White Onion: Adds a subtle sweetness and aromatic depth to the beef.
  • Garlic: Essential for building a rich flavor base for the ground beef.
  • Ground Beef: Lean ground beef works well, but a slightly higher fat content can add more flavor.
  • Salt and Pepper: Basic seasonings to bring out the best in the beef.

  • Shredded Lettuce: Provides a fresh, crisp texture and vibrant color.

How to Make Cheeseburger Bun Pizzas: A Simple Guide

Creating these bun pizzas is a straightforward process, broken down into a few easy steps. Follow along to make these delicious treats in no time:

  • Prepare the Special Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, mayonnaise, sweet relish, and spicy brown mustard until thoroughly combined and smooth. This sauce is a crucial component, so make sure it’s well mixed. Set it aside for later.
  • Toast the Buns: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Carefully separate your hamburger buns and place each half, cut-side up, on a large baking sheet. For easy cleanup and to prevent sticking, either spray the baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray or line it with parchment paper. Toast the buns in the preheated oven for about 5 minutes, or until they are lightly golden and crisp. This step is essential for creating a sturdy base that won’t get soggy.
  • Cook the Beef Mixture: Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced white onion and minced garlic, sautéing for about 2 minutes until they become fragrant and the onions turn translucent. Then, add the ground beef to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to break the beef into several equal-sized pieces as it starts to combine with the onion and garlic.
  • Brown the Beef: Continue breaking the beef into smaller and smaller pieces as it browns. Stir frequently to ensure even cooking. The beef is ready when it’s fully browned, with no pink remaining, and begins to crisp slightly. Once cooked, remove the skillet from the heat and season the beef generously with salt and pepper to taste. Drain any excess grease to prevent the pizzas from becoming oily.

  • Assemble the Pizzas: Take your toasted bun halves and spread a few teaspoons of the prepared special sauce evenly over each. Next, sprinkle a light layer of shredded cheese directly over the sauce. This acts as a barrier and adds flavor.
  • Add Beef & More Cheese: Top each bun with 3-4 tablespoons of the seasoned ground beef mixture. Don’t be shy! Then, sprinkle a generous amount of additional shredded cheddar cheese over the beef.
  • Bake to Perfection: Carefully place the assembled bun pizzas back into the oven. Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly, and the edges of the buns are golden. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.

  • Garnish and Serve: Once removed from the oven, immediately top each hot bun pizza with a handful of fresh shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, chopped dill pickles, and a sprinkle of bacon bits. Finish with an extra drizzle of the special sauce for a burst of flavor. Serve warm and watch them disappear!

Tips for Success & Delicious Variations

Pro Tips for the Best Results:

  • Don’t Skip Toasting: Toasting the buns creates a barrier against sogginess and adds a delightful crisp texture.
  • Drain the Beef: After browning, be sure to drain any excess fat from the ground beef. This prevents a greasy pizza and keeps the flavors clean.
  • Customize to Your Liking: While the classic toppings are fantastic, feel free to experiment!

Customize Your Creation:

  • Cheese Swap: Try pepper jack for a kick, Monterey Jack for extra meltiness, or a classic American cheese slice.
  • Extra Veggies: Sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, or even some thinly sliced bell peppers can add new dimensions.
  • Heat It Up: Add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the special sauce for a spicy twist.
  • Protein Alternatives: Ground turkey or chicken can be used for a lighter version, or plant-based crumbles for a vegetarian option.

Make It a Complete Meal:

These Cheeseburger Bun Pizzas are hearty enough to stand alone, but they also pair wonderfully with a simple side. Consider serving them with: crispy French fries or onion rings, a fresh garden salad with a light vinaigrette, or some store-bought or homemade potato chips.

Description

These Cheeseburger Bun Pizzas are a delightful fusion of two comfort food favorites. Made with perfectly seasoned ground beef, generously topped with melty cheddar cheese, fresh shredded lettuce, juicy tomatoes, tangy dill pickles, crispy bacon, and an incredible homemade special sauce, all served pizza-style on a toasted hamburger bun. This recipe is quick, easy, and absolutely irresistible, making it perfect for a fun weeknight dinner or a casual party.

Ingredients

  • 4 large hamburger buns, split in half
  • 1 small white onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 lean preferred for flavor)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a cheddar blend)
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce, for topping
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes, for topping
  • 1/4 cup chopped dill pickles, for topping
  • 1/4 cup bacon bits, for topping
  • Special Sauce (ingredients listed below)

Special Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 teaspoons sweet relish
  • 2 teaspoons spicy brown mustard

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Special Sauce: In a small bowl, thoroughly whisk together the ketchup, mayonnaise, sweet relish, and spicy brown mustard until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Set this flavorful sauce aside.
  2. Preheat Oven & Toast Buns: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the separated hamburger bun halves, cut-side up, on a large baking sheet. Line the sheet with parchment paper or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Toast the buns in the preheated oven for 5 minutes until lightly golden and crisp.
  3. Sauté Onion & Garlic: In a large non-stick skillet, heat over medium-high heat. Add the diced white onion and minced garlic. Sauté for about 2 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions become fragrant and turn translucent.
  4. Cook & Season Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet with the sautéed onion and garlic. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, break up the beef into smaller pieces as it browns. Continue cooking and breaking up the beef until it is entirely browned, with no pink remaining, and has started to crisp slightly. Remove from heat and drain any excess grease. Season the cooked beef generously with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Assemble & Bake Pizzas: Spread a few teaspoons of the prepared special sauce over the cut side of each toasted bun. Sprinkle a light layer of shredded cheddar cheese over the sauce. Evenly distribute 3-4 tablespoons of the seasoned ground beef mixture onto each bun, then top with a more generous sprinkle of shredded cheese. Place the assembled pizzas back on the baking sheet and bake in the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted and bubbly.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Once the pizzas are out of the oven, immediately top each with fresh shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, chopped dill pickles, and a sprinkle of bacon bits. Finish with an additional drizzle of the special sauce before serving warm.
