Ingredients and Supplies You’ll Need

(Detailed measurements and instructions are provided in the recipe card at the bottom of this post)

Ingredients:

  • Fresh Mozzarella Cheese Log (Pre-Sliced, 16 ounces): Look for a log with approximately 16 slices, each about 1/4 inch thick. This consistency makes it easy to cut into heart shapes.
  • Flamin’ Hot Crunchy Cheetos (Finely Ground): These are the true stars of the show, delivering the iconic spicy flavor and vibrant red color that makes this snack so unique. For an alternative, you could experiment with Flamin’ Hot Fries or Takis Fuego chips, but make sure to grind them very finely for the best coating.
  • Large Eggs (Lightly Beaten): The beaten eggs act as the binding agent, allowing the ground Cheetos coating to adhere perfectly to the mozzarella hearts, ensuring a crispy and flavorful crust.
  • Vegetable Oil or Canola Oil: For frying the mozzarella hearts. Choose an oil with a high smoke point to ensure even cooking and avoid unwanted flavors.
  • Spicy Ranch or Regular Ranch: This is your dipping sauce! Spicy ranch adds another layer of heat that complements the Cheetos perfectly, while regular ranch provides a cool and refreshing contrast.

Supplies:

  • 2-inch Heart-Shaped Cookie Cutter: This is essential for creating the adorable heart shapes.
  • Cutting Board: A sturdy surface for safely cutting the mozzarella cheese.
  • Sheet Pan: Used for chilling and freezing the mozzarella hearts, preparing them for frying.
  • Parchment Paper: This prevents the cheese from sticking to the sheet pan, ensuring easy removal.
  • Food Processor: This is the easiest way to finely grind the Cheetos into a coating consistency.
  • Mixing Bowls: You’ll need separate bowls for the beaten eggs and the Cheetos dust.
  • Large Frying Pan: A pan large enough to hold enough oil for deep-frying the hearts.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Mozzarella Hearts

Ready to get cooking? Follow these easy steps to create your own batch of these irresistible spicy mozzarella hearts:

  1. Shape the Mozzarella: On a clean cutting board, use the 2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter to carefully cut each slice of mozzarella cheese into a perfect heart shape. For an even more defined heart, use the tip of the cutter to make a deeper indentation at the top of each heart.
  2. Chill the Hearts: Arrange the mozzarella hearts in a single layer on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Make sure the sheet pan will fit comfortably in your refrigerator and freezer. Refrigerate the hearts for 15 minutes. This will help them firm up and prevent them from melting too quickly during frying.

The first steps in creating these spicy delights.
  1. Prepare the Cheetos Coating: While the mozzarella is chilling, pour the Cheetos into a food processor and pulse until they are finely ground into a powder-like consistency.
  2. Reserve and Transfer: Carefully reserve 1 cup of the Cheetos dust in a separate bowl. You will use this to coat the hearts again after they are fried, ensuring maximum flavor and crunch. Transfer the remaining Cheetos dust to a shallow mixing bowl.
  3. Beat the Eggs: In a separate shallow mixing bowl, lightly beat the eggs until they are well combined.
  4. First Coating: Dip each chilled cheese heart into the beaten egg, making sure it is fully coated.

  1. Cheetos Crust: Immediately after the egg dip, toss the egg-coated heart into the bowl of Cheetos dust, ensuring it is completely coated on all sides.
  2. Double Coating: Repeat the egg dip and Cheetos coating process one more time. This creates a thick, flavorful crust that will hold up well during frying.
  3. Freeze or Refrigerate: Once the hearts are double-coated, transfer them back to the parchment-lined sheet pan. Freeze the coated cheese hearts for 30 minutes to help them firm up completely, or cover the pan tightly and refrigerate for up to 2 days if you’re planning to fry them later.

  1. Prepare for Frying: Place the remaining 1 cup of reserved Cheetos dust in another shallow mixing bowl. This is for the final coating after frying.
  2. Heat the Oil: Pour enough vegetable or canola oil into a large frying pan so that it comes approximately 2 inches up the side. Heat the oil over medium heat until it reaches a temperature of 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure accurate temperature.
  3. Frying Time: Using a slotted spoon, carefully lower the frozen or refrigerated hearts into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Fry the hearts until they are lightly browned all over and the cheese is fully melted inside, about 2 minutes per batch.
  4. Cooling Rack: Lift the fried hearts from the oil using the slotted spoon and transfer them to a baking rack that is set over a rimmed sheet pan. This allows excess oil to drain off, ensuring a crispy crust.

  1. Final Coating: Carefully transfer each fried heart to the bowl containing the reserved Cheetos dust. Turn the heart to coat it completely, ensuring every surface is covered in that extra layer of spicy goodness.

Storage and Reheating Instructions

Storage: If you have any leftovers (which is unlikely!), store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Place parchment paper between each layer to prevent sticking.

Reheating: For the best results, reheat the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Mozzarella Hearts in an air fryer until they are crispy and heated through (about 3-5 minutes). Alternatively, you can reheat them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for about 8-10 minutes. Microwaving is not recommended, as the coating will become soggy. However, if you’re in a time crunch, it will still be gooey and cheesy inside!
