San Francisco, Napa & Sonoma Valley Culinary Travel Guide

San Francisco: A Gastronomic Urban Escape

Our Californian adventure began in mid-January, as Brandon and I met in San Francisco for an exciting day in the city before heading to Napa Valley with friends for a long weekend. The entire trip was nothing short of incredible, an indulgent celebration of food and wine that left us craving more.

First Bites in the City by the Bay: Tony’s Coal Fired Pizza

Upon dropping our bags at our San Francisco hotel, our first stop was a culinary pilgrimage to one of our all-time favorite pizza spots: Tony’s Coal Fired Pizza & Slice House. While they operate a full restaurant, we gravitate towards the lively slice house next door. The experience is consistently outstanding. Their crust strikes a perfect balance – crisp on the outside, delightfully chewy within – providing the ideal foundation for their high-quality, flavor-packed toppings. With an array of mouth-watering choices, we opted for a few slices as an appetizer, knowing a bigger dinner awaited us. Pizza by the slice is undoubtedly the way to go here, offering a quick yet deeply satisfying taste of their craft. While the Sicilian style didn’t quite capture our hearts, their regular slices are simply unparalleled. This spot is an absolute must-try for any pizza enthusiast visiting the San Francisco area.

Exploring San Francisco’s Charm on Foot

With our dinner reservation still a few hours away, we embraced the San Francisco spirit by strolling through its iconic streets. There’s a unique joy in wandering hand-in-hand with Brandon, discovering the city’s vibrant culture and diverse culinary landscape. These moments, filled with anticipation and exploration, truly define our happy place.

An Unexpected Culinary Triumph at The House (Now Closed)

During our walk, we serendipitously passed The House restaurant, a highly acclaimed establishment we had tried and failed to secure a reservation at on previous visits and for this trip. Renowned as one of the city’s best, securing a table at this intimate spot was notoriously difficult. Driven by a hopeful impulse, we decided to inquire about cancellations, and to our delight, they had one! We were thrilled to learn we could return in an hour. We promptly canceled our existing dinner reservation and retreated to a nearby, trendy bar to enjoy some cocktails while we awaited our long-desired table. This restaurant had been on our culinary radar for years, and the opportunity felt like a true stroke of luck.

Our dining experience at The House was every bit as incredible as we had heard. The restaurant exuded a quaint charm, complemented by impeccable service and, most importantly, truly outstanding food.

The House Restaurant, San Francisco - Fine Dining Experience

We started with their deep-fried salmon rolls, a delectable appetizer. For our main courses, we savored the perfectly cooked pork chop and the unforgettable wasabi noodles with steak. Every dish was masterfully prepared, bursting with rich flavors that left a lasting impression. We were so captivated by the wasabi noodles and steak that we eagerly recreated it at home the very next weekend. The House delivered an unforgettable dining experience, and we are incredibly grateful we had the chance to dine there before its regrettable closure. We were so completely satisfied that, for perhaps one of the few times in my life, I skipped dessert that night – a true testament to how thoroughly stuffed and content we were!

Day Two in San Francisco: Brunch, Tech, and Treats

The following day brought another exciting chapter to our San Francisco journey. We met up with dear friends from business school who reside in the city. Liz, our wonderful host, took us on a tour of her vibrant neighborhood, culminating in an exclusive visit to Google Headquarters, where her husband works. It was a day filled with delightful discoveries and, as expected, plenty of deliciousness!

Brunch Bliss at Zazie

Our day kicked off with brunch at Zazie, a renowned brunch spot consistently rated among San Francisco’s best, conveniently located just blocks from our friends’ home. Having bookmarked Zazie on Yelp as a “must-try,” I was absolutely thrilled when Liz announced our destination. It was truly a treat!

After skipping dessert the previous night, I had a distinct craving for something sweet. My eyes immediately landed on the “Griddle Flight” on the menu, and I knew it was meant for me. It was brunch bliss personified! The flight featured perfectly cooked French toast, layered over a gingerbread pancake adorned with roasted Bosc pears and a tangy lemon curd. Beneath that, a lemon ricotta pancake offered more lemon curd and freshly made butter. Each component was simply to die for! Seriously, I’ve been dreaming about this brunch ever since. I absolutely loved every single bite.

A Glimpse into Google Headquarters: A Foodie’s Paradise

Post-brunch, we ventured to Mountain View, California, for an exclusive tour of Google Headquarters with Liz’s husband, Andrew. He casually mentioned that incredible food was available everywhere and that it was all free. I didn’t fully grasp the scale of this statement until we began navigating through the numerous buildings. Let me tell you, I’m convinced all Google employees do is eat! Seriously, each of the 100+ buildings boasts its own full-service restaurant, complemented by charming cafes, convenient pod-like grocery stores, ice cream machines, elaborate dessert stations, and fresh juice bars. We were absolutely blown away! It’s clear that hunger is never an issue at Google. What’s more, the food quality was exceptional, prepared by professional chefs in each restaurant. We were truly impressed by the culinary abundance and variety.

We practically ate our way across the sprawling campus as Andrew shared fascinating insights into life at Google, highlighting its vibrant and rewarding culture. The experience was so remarkable, I almost submitted an application on the spot! It was a truly unique and enlightening experience.

Indulgent Treats at The Ice Cream Bar

After our Google tour, we headed back into San Francisco, making a direct route to Liz’s favorite ice cream shop. Because, clearly, we hadn’t eaten enough yet! She insisted that The Ice Cream Bar was a must-try, and we were incredibly grateful she took us there. The house-made ice cream was nothing short of phenomenal. We sampled almost every single flavor, each one proving to be exceptionally good. For our grand bowl, we settled on four delightful flavors: butterscotch, mint chip, chocolate peanut butter, and coffee. While I loved them all, the butterscotch was undeniably my favorite – simply scrumptious!

Saying goodbye to Liz was truly difficult. We lived right down the street from each other during business school, seeing each other almost daily for two straight years. I miss her dearly, and spending this wonderful day with her was a joy. We’ll definitely need to start planning our next reunion soon. Thank you for such a fun and delicious day, dear friend! Love you!

Transition to Wine Country: Napa & Sonoma Beckon

Following our heartfelt farewells, we joined another couple from our group, and together we set off towards the heart of California’s wine country. It was officially wine time!

We had two full days and three nights meticulously planned for our exploration of Napa and Sonoma. Our accommodation was an adorable house located in downtown Napa, providing a perfect base. One of the best decisions of the trip, without a doubt, was hiring a dedicated driver to navigate us through the wineries each day. This foresight eliminated any worry about finding an Uber at every remote vineyard, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the tasting experience without logistical concerns. It proved to be an incredibly fun and stress-free way to explore.

First Night Delight: Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch

On our arrival night in Napa, we dined at the exquisite Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch. The restaurant offered a fantastic atmosphere, superb drinks, and truly outstanding food. Our wine country adventure was off to an absolutely brilliant start!

Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch Napa - Dining Experience

To experience as much of the menu as possible, we opted for a family-style dining approach, ordering a variety of plates to share. The standout dishes included the succulent meatballs, the rich and creamy mac and cheese, the perfectly crispy potatoes served with a spicy mayo, and the comforting potato gnocchi ragu. And, of course, the desserts were an absolute highlight!

Oh, my! What a chocolate pie! It was an absolute showstopper, so divine that a friendly fork fight might have occurred for the very last bite. The beignets were pleasant but simply couldn’t compete with the pie’s grandeur.

Napa Valley Bakery Tour: Fueling Up for Wine Tasting

After a restful night in our cozy cottage, Brandon and I decided to kick off the next day with a walk-run, anticipating another full day of indulging in wine and food. The weather was absolutely perfect, setting the stage for a delightful morning.

While we certainly got some good exercise, our run quickly transformed into an impromptu bakery tour. I simply couldn’t resist! We kept encountering charming little bakeries, each brimming with an irresistible array of baked goodies that beckoned us inside.

We ended up collecting a full box of treats from each of three bakeries, bringing our carb-loaded treasures back to our house. This delightful morning feast provided the perfect fuel before a day of wine tasting. Our day was clearly off to an amazing start, indulging in the sweet side of Napa.

Napa Valley Baked Goods - Model Bakery, Sweetie Pies, Alexis Baking Company

Our sweet haul included baked goods from The Model Bakery, Sweetie Pies, and Alexis Baking Company. Each bakery presented a fantastic selection, with distinct stand-out items.

  • **The Model Bakery** – Their homemade English muffins are an absolute must-try! They surpass any English muffin I’ve ever tasted. All of their breads were also incredibly delicious.
  • **Sweetie Pies** – We picked up a truly fabulous chocolate cake for our friend’s birthday celebration, along with their amazing cinnamon roll and a peanut butter-filled peanut butter cookie sandwich. This charming little bakery won our hearts.
  • **Alexis Baking Company** – Our favorites here were their delightful muffins, scones, and a particularly tasty fruit oat bar. They offer a vast selection of baked goods and breads. While we only grabbed treats to-go, their full restaurant and breakfast/brunch menu looked absolutely incredible, making it a definite must-visit for our next trip.

Navigating Napa’s Vineyards: The Smart Way

After our fulfilling bakery run, it was time for the main event: wine tasting. We headed straight to the vineyards. As mentioned earlier, hiring a driver for our rental car for the two days we were in wine country proved to be one of the best decisions of the entire trip. This allowed us to seamlessly transition from one winery to another without the constant concern of finding an Uber, especially since some wineries are located in more remote areas where ride-share services can be scarce and slow to arrive. This brilliant logistical choice, made even more reasonable when splitting the cost among a group, truly enhanced our experience, allowing us to relax and savor every moment.

Crafting Our Own Blends at Conn Creek Winery

Our first winery visit of the day was a truly unique and immersive winemaking experience, something we found incredibly amazing!

We spent the entire morning at Conn Creek Winery, delving into the intricate art of wine blending. We learned about the various regions where grapes are cultivated and how the same grape varietal can yield remarkably different flavors depending on its specific valley of origin. The highlight was tasting 25 distinct Cabernet varieties, which we then used to blend our very own bottle of wine! I proudly named mine “BakerMama’s Bedtime Blend.” The only bittersweet detail is their recommendation to let the wine age for at least six months before enjoying it. I cannot tell you how many nights I’ve put the boys to bed and been tempted to uncork my personalized bottle. However, I am patiently waiting for that perfect evening to savor my creation.

We were thoroughly impressed by both the quality of the wines and the depth of the experience at Conn Creek. We can’t wait to return for another visit!

Napa’s Premier Wineries: Stag’s Leap & White Rock Vineyards

The primary reason for our trip to Napa was to celebrate my dear friend Nicole’s 30th birthday, and celebrate we did! Nicole and her husband unfortunately missed their flight to Napa, arriving a little late to our first winery. However, we were ready to welcome them with celebratory cake and full glasses of wine. After our blending session at Conn Creek, we continued our winery tour, visiting Stag’s Leap Winery and White Rock Vineyards. Both establishments boast exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons, impressive cellars, and offer genuinely enjoyable tasting experiences.

A French Delicacy at Bouchon Bakery

After all the wine tasting, another bakery visit was definitely in order. We headed straight to Bouchon Bakery in Yountville, one of my absolute favorite bakeries anywhere! Everything about this establishment exudes love and meticulous craftsmanship. From the exquisite presentation to the sheer amazingness of each pastry, cookie, and bread, it’s a feast for the senses. We gathered a delightful variety of baked goodies and a box of delicate macarons, which we promptly devoured minutes after purchase. Truly fabulous! If you’ve never had the pleasure, a visit to a Bouchon Bakery should be on your ASAP list.

Italian Comfort at Tra Vigne

Dinner that evening was at Tra Vigne, a fantastic Italian restaurant. We indulged heavily in their delicious bread, flavorful cheeses, fresh salads, and generous plates upon plates of pasta. And, of course, more wine – because when in Napa, one simply must!

Sonoma Valley: Rustic Charm and Culinary Discoveries

It was a long yet incredibly fun night, so it’s safe to say we were all moving a little slowly the next morning. But nothing a big, hearty breakfast biscuit sandwich from Oxbow Public Market couldn’t cure! This bustling market is a fantastic spot for a quick, delicious bite to kickstart your day in Napa.

Journey to Sonoma’s Serenity

The following day, our adventure led us to Sonoma, eager to discover its unique charm. We were instantly captivated! The drive itself was breathtaking, winding through picturesque landscapes. The wineries were truly gorgeous, and the quaint Healdsburg town square was utterly charming, brimming with delightful sights and activities.

Arista Winery: A Hidden Gem in Sonoma

I am incredibly grateful to an Instagram friend who shared her family’s winery in Sonoma with me, because Arista Winery was nothing short of amazing! The property itself is absolutely stunning, boasting meticulously maintained gardens, ancient olive trees, happy chickens and sheep, an on-site private chef, and, of course, acres of flourishing vines. Their Pinot Noir is truly unforgettable – so much so that we stocked up! The only slight downside is the one-year waiting list to become an A-list member and receive regular shipments of their exceptional wines.

Relaxing by the Fire at Gary Farrell Winery

We also had the pleasure of visiting Gary Farrell Winery in Sonoma, where we enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing fireside tasting. The cozy ambiance paired with their exquisite wines made for a perfect afternoon.

Healdsburg Square: A Culinary Wander

After our two winery tastings, we headed into the charming Healdsburg town square to grab a bite to eat and browse the local shops. The square is a vibrant hub with so much to explore and, importantly, so many tempting eateries!

Naturally, my first stop was the nearest bakery, where I had to pick up a cookie while we scouted for a lunch spot. This amazing sea salt chocolate chunk cookie, a perfect blend of sweet and savory, came from Oakville Grocery Co. – a delightful find!

Tapas Extravaganza at Willi’s Seafood

For lunch, we settled on Willi’s Seafood, and being quite hungry after our tastings (and perhaps having had our fair share of wine), we ordered almost everything from their extensive tapas-style menu. Every dish looked and sounded incredibly appealing! Among the many highlights was this sensational clam & garlic flatbread, generously topped with crispy bacon and fresh green onions. It was a flavor explosion!

And then came the dessert: a caramelized banana split featuring luscious vanilla bean ice cream, a rich peanut butter mousse, and crunchy caramel chocolate krispies. Oh me, oh my! It was an absolute dream.

Healdsburg’s Dessert Wonderland: Moustache Baked Goods and Noble Folk

One might think we would have hit our sugar high by now, but no! We continued our delightful walk through the square, eager to explore all the other bakeries and sweet treats it had to offer. Our first stop was Moustache Baked Goods, an incredibly cute bakery known for its amazing cupcakes.

Then came what I might confidently declare was the most amazing treat of the entire trip: a divine maple walnut pie, perfectly complemented by house-made ginger ice cream, from Noble Folk Ice Cream and Pie Bar. The pie itself was sheer perfection, and the unique, spicy kick of the ginger ice cream on top elevated it to crazy delicious heights. I’ve had dreams about this dessert ever since! I absolutely adored this charming pie and ice cream shop.

We popped into a few other bakeries and coffee shops, collecting an assortment of treats along the way. Finally, we brought all our sweet treasures to one last coffee shop, where we laid them out for a grand group tasting. Here we are, enthusiastically digging in and savoring every single bite!

Concluding Our Epicurean Adventure: Ad Hoc

By our last night in wine country, we were thoroughly stuffed and wonderfully tired, yet we had a reservation at Ad Hoc that we simply couldn’t pass up. Brandon and I had previously dined there on a Monday night, savoring their famous fried chicken, which was utterly incredible. We were eager to return and experience more of their culinary greatness. This time, however, the service fell a bit short, and they were out of the add-on special as well as a few other sides, leading to a slight disappointment in the overall experience. Despite these minor setbacks, the short rib entree was absolutely fantastic, slow-cooked to perfection and bursting with rich flavor.

And the build-your-own sundae, featuring high-quality ingredients, provided a fun and delicious end to our meal.
