Family Memories 2017

Capturing Priceless Moments: Our Unforgettable 2017 Family Photoshoot in Dallas’s Bishop Arts District

Our 2017 family pictures truly stand out as some of our most cherished and memorable. Dressed in timeless neutral outfits and set against the vibrant, urban backdrop of the Bishop Arts District, these photographs authentically captured the essence of our family. They are a testament to a beautiful moment in time that we will treasure for generations to come, reflecting both the chaos and the profound love that defines us.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our incredibly talented friend and professional photographer, Madison Katlin Photography. Her exceptional skill and remarkable patience were instrumental in capturing our family’s dynamic so naturally and beautifully. Madison has a unique ability to put everyone at ease, transforming what can often be a stressful event into a fun and memorable experience, even with spirited little ones.

The Perfect Backdrop: An Urban Family Photoshoot in Dallas’s Bishop Arts District

Choosing the right location is paramount for any successful family photoshoot, and we couldn’t have been happier with our decision to have our photos taken in one of our absolute favorite spots in Dallas: the Bishop Arts District. This charming, artsy area offers a unique blend of quaint shops, award-winning restaurants, and a truly laid-back, family-friendly vibe that resonates deeply with us. Its distinctive character, with historic brick buildings, colorful murals, and quirky storefronts, provided an unparalleled urban aesthetic that beautifully complemented our neutral outfit choices.

The district’s diverse architecture and vibrant street life offer endless opportunities for captivating backdrops, ensuring that every frame tells a story. From sun-dappled alleyways to bustling sidewalks, each corner of Bishop Arts presented a new canvas for Madison to work her magic. We believe that selecting a location that holds personal significance makes the resulting photographs even more meaningful, embedding them with a layer of shared history and affection for a place we truly adore.

Styling Your Shoot: The Timeless Appeal of Neutral Outfits

For our family pictures, we intentionally opted for neutral outfits. This choice was driven by a desire for a classic, timeless aesthetic that wouldn’t detract from the genuine emotions and connections captured in the photographs. Neutral tones—creams, grays, whites, and soft browns—blend harmoniously with almost any setting, particularly an urban one like Bishop Arts, allowing the focus to remain squarely on the family members themselves. They create a soft, cohesive look that avoids dating the pictures and ensures they will look just as beautiful years from now.

When planning your own family photoshoot, consider how outfit choices can enhance the overall feel. While matching outfits can be fun, coordinating colors and styles within a specific palette, such as neutrals, often yields a more sophisticated and enduring result. It creates visual unity without feeling overly staged, allowing each individual’s personality to shine through while contributing to a harmonious family portrait. This approach also simplifies the planning process, as it’s easier to find complementary pieces within a neutral spectrum.

A Day of Laughter, Love, and Little Antics

I distinctly remember scheduling our photoshoot on my birthday, a strategic move I hoped would encourage maximum cooperation from everyone and make “mama happy!” 😉 Haha, wishful thinking, right? As any parent knows, planning a photoshoot with young children often involves a delicate balance of hope and expectation, always ready for the unexpected. While the day was indeed filled with immense joy and beautiful moments, it also presented its fair share of real-life family dynamics.

Thankfully, our boys were amazingly sweet and truly seemed to enjoy the experience. Their enthusiasm and genuine smiles brought a wonderful energy to the session, making some of the most heartwarming images of the day. They explored, they laughed, and they truly embraced the adventure of being in front of the camera, showcasing their individual personalities and their strong brotherly bond.

Our little miss priss, on the other hand, had her own unique agenda that day. While her brothers were happily posing, she chose a different path:

She pretty much screamed her way through the entire session. Whew! It wasn’t because she was sick or tired; it was simply because she had decided that she did NOT want to smile or even look at Madison’s camera. She was deep in that toddler stage where if it wasn’t her idea, it simply wasn’t happening. The situation, while challenging in the moment, became quite comical by the end of the session. Mama definitely needed a drink to unwind after that!

We exhausted every trick in the book, from offering gummies to playing her favorite songs on the iPhone, all just to prevent her from loudly protesting with a resounding “NOOOO!” It’s a universal parenting experience—the best-laid plans often give way to the unpredictable whims of a toddler. But even these moments of defiance become part of the family story, reminding us of the delightful, challenging, and utterly authentic stages of childhood.

Despite the challenges, Madison, with her incredible skill and unwavering professionalism, still managed to capture several truly great family pictures. In the moment, it felt like we might end up with none, but her ability to find those fleeting, perfect frames amidst the chaos is precisely why professional photographers are so invaluable. These authentic moments, even the slightly imperfect ones, tell the truest story of our family at that particular stage.

The Unconditional Joy of Family: Cherishing Every Moment

Oh, how I love this {not so little} family that Brandon and I have been so incredibly blessed with. Every glance at these photographs fills my heart with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and joy. They serve as a powerful reminder of the precious journey we’re on together, documenting not just faces, but the very essence of our shared life.

These four bring us so much joy, pride, and an undeniable purpose. To see them healthy, happy, and so vibrantly full of life is the greatest reward. We are so incredibly thankful for each one of them, for their unique personalities, their boundless energy, and the constant lessons they teach us about love, patience, and resilience. We eagerly look forward to another amazing year of raising them, guiding them, and watching them grow and flourish into the incredible individuals they are destined to become.

Family photos are more than just pictures; they are tangible memories, anchors to specific points in time that allow us to revisit cherished moments. They capture the fleeting stages of childhood, the evolving dynamics of a family, and the enduring power of love. Investing in professional photography is, in essence, investing in your family’s history, creating heirlooms that will be passed down and treasured for generations.

Sweet Endings: Post-Photoshoot Treats at Emporium Pies

To cap off our memorable family photo session—and as a well-deserved reward for the kids’ (and parents’!) cooperation—we had promised them pie. So, our adventure concluded with a delightful trip to Emporium Pies, a local Dallas institution known for its delectable homemade pies. It was the perfect ending to a busy morning, allowing us to unwind and enjoy a few slices with the freedom to dig in without worrying about getting chocolate or salted caramel all over our nice, neutral clothes. 😉 The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked goods made it an ideal spot to reflect on the day’s experiences and simply enjoy each other’s company.

Emporium Pies in Bishop Arts offers a charming, nostalgic ambiance that perfectly complements the district’s overall vibe. Their inventive flavors and commitment to quality make it a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth. Enjoying those rich, comforting slices was not just about the dessert; it was about creating another joyful family memory, a sweet reward that solidified the positive associations with our photoshoot day.

Cherishing Moments and Looking Ahead

As we reflect on these incredible 2017 family photos, we’re reminded of the importance of pausing time, even just for a moment, to capture the magic of family life. Whether your photoshoot is perfectly orchestrated or delightfully chaotic, the resulting images become invaluable treasures. They tell your unique story, preserving memories that fade with time and allowing you to revisit the love and joy that bind your family together.

To those planning their own family photoshoot, our advice is simple: embrace the process, choose a photographer whose style resonates with you, pick a location that feels personal, and don’t strive for perfection. Instead, aim for authenticity. Those candid, unplanned moments often become the most cherished photographs of all. And perhaps, plan a sweet treat for afterward!

We wish you and your loved ones a New Year filled with abundant health, countless blessings, and everything that brings you happiness and fills your life with meaning.

xoxo,
