Essential Ingredients for Your Crispy Baked Wonton Chips
Crafting these delectable wonton chips requires just a handful of simple ingredients and basic kitchen tools. The beauty lies in the quality of each component and the ease with which they come together to create something truly special. Here’s what you’ll need to get started on your journey to homemade chip perfection:
- Wonton wrappers: The star of the show! These thin, pliable squares transform into glorious chips when baked. Look for them in the refrigerated section of your grocery store, usually near tofu or fresh pasta.
- Kosher salt: Its larger flakes adhere well and provide a more pronounced burst of salty flavor compared to fine table salt.
- Ground black pepper: Adds a subtle warmth and aromatic complexity that balances the other seasonings.
- Garlic powder: Imparts a savory, umami depth without the moisture of fresh garlic, crucial for keeping the chips crispy.
- Sesame oil: Offers a distinct nutty aroma and flavor, contributing significantly to the Asian-inspired profile of the chips. It also helps achieve that desirable golden crispness.
- Baking sheet: Essential for even baking and easy cleanup.
- Silicone basting brush: Perfect for evenly distributing the sesame oil without tearing the delicate wrappers.
Quick Tip: Smart Substitutions for Sesame Oil
While sesame oil is highly recommended for its unique flavor profile, dietary restrictions or simply not having it on hand shouldn’t deter you from making these fantastic baked wonton chips. There are several excellent alternatives that will still deliver delicious results. When substituting, aim for a 1:1 ratio to maintain the correct moisture level and aid in crisping. Consider these options:
- Olive oil: Opt for a light olive oil, as its milder flavor won’t overpower the delicate wonton and seasoning. Extra virgin olive oil might be too strong for some palates.
- Peanut oil: If you enjoy a slightly nutty undertone and don’t have a peanut allergy, peanut oil is a great choice that complements Asian flavors beautifully.
- Grape seed oil: This is a fantastic neutral oil with a high smoke point, making it ideal for baking. It won’t impart any distinct flavor, allowing the seasoning to shine.
- Avocado oil: Another excellent neutral oil known for its healthy fats and high smoke point. It’s a superb all-around option that won’t interfere with the desired taste.
Each of these oils will help the wonton wrappers crisp up wonderfully in the oven, so choose the one that best suits your preferences and pantry.

How to Master Your Own Baked Wonton Chips
Creating these light and crispy baked wonton chips is surprisingly simple and quick, making them an ideal choice for last-minute appetizers or spontaneous snack cravings. Follow these straightforward steps to achieve perfect results every time:
- Preheat your oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). This ensures the oven is at the optimal temperature for quick and even crisping of the wontons as soon as they go in.
- Prepare the seasoning blend: In a small bowl, combine 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder. Stir these ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined. This simple mixture will impart incredible flavor to your chips.
- Oil the baking sheet: Lightly brush the bottom of a large baking sheet with half of the 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. This not only prevents sticking but also helps the wontons achieve a beautiful golden brown and crispy texture.
- Cut the wonton wrappers: Take each wonton wrapper and carefully cut it in half diagonally. This yields two triangular-shaped pieces, which are the perfect size and shape for individual chips.

- Arrange and brush the wontons: Carefully arrange the diagonally cut wonton halves in a single layer on the oiled baking sheet. Ensure there’s a little space between each piece to allow for even airflow and crisping. Then, using your silicone basting brush, lightly brush the tops of all the wonton halves with the remaining sesame oil.

- Season the chips: Evenly sprinkle the prepared seasoning mixture over the tops of the oiled wonton halves. Be generous but ensure a light, even coat on each chip for balanced flavor.

- Bake to perfection: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-6 minutes. Keep a close eye on them, as they can go from perfectly golden to over-browned quickly due to their thinness. For even browning, rotate the pan halfway through the baking time. The wontons should be a beautiful golden brown and wonderfully crisp.

- Cool and serve: Once baked, remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the chips cool on the pan for a few minutes. This crucial step allows them to firm up and achieve their ultimate crispiness. After cooling slightly, toss them gently to loosen any that may be stuck and then they’re ready for serving.

Serving and Storing Your Crispy Baked Wonton Chips
These versatile Light and Crispy Baked Wonton Chips are fantastic on their own, but they truly shine when paired with your favorite dips. We absolutely adore dipping them in sweet red chili sauce for a delightful sweet and spicy kick, or with our creamy edamame hummus for a rich, savory experience. Don’t be afraid to get creative! They’re also excellent with a classic soy-ginger dipping sauce, a spicy peanut sauce, or even a simple sweet and sour sauce.
Beyond dipping, consider these chips as a crunchy topping for Asian salads, a unique alternative to croutons in soups, or even crumbled over stir-fries for added texture. Their light, neutral-yet-savory flavor makes them incredibly adaptable to various culinary applications.
To ensure your homemade wonton chips maintain their delightful crispness for as long as possible, proper storage is key. First, allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet or a wire rack; warmth can trap moisture and make them soggy. Once fully cooled, transfer them to an airtight container or a zip-top baggie. Store them at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and humidity. When stored correctly, these crispy wonders will stay fresh and crunchy for 2-3 days, making them perfect for meal prepping snacks or appetizers in advance.
